Traditional moorland areas have relied on controlled burning for successful management of heather for many years with great success. New restrictions on burning and the safeguards required are forcing Managers to look for a new solution to this problem. Faced with burning restrictions, North Yorkshire Gamekeeper Colin Short has found the answer in Ryetec's new TSN heavy duty flail topper.

Colin required a machine to cut the heather on very uneven and stony ground, finely chop the cut material and spread it evenly over the heather stubble so as not to restrict new growth. All this must also be done quickly and efficiently due to the large areas which are to cover.

Ryetec's new TSN heavy duty flail topper was perfect for the task, its large rear wheels instead of a roller are ideal for undulating ground. The large diameter flail rotor, long heavy duty flails and massive clearance between rotor and frame mean it will cut even the thickest growth easily without blocking and combined with the optional double skin frame, stones present little problem. Fitted with two optional static counter knifes covering the full width of the topper all material is cut at least three times reducing the cuttings to a small and easily degradable size. The lack of large clumps of cuttings because of the TSN's opening rear hood and excellent even spread of chopped material means no restriction of growth to any of the newly topped heather plants, an improvement on the damage done with traditional burning.

The ability to work in these conditions has proved that the TSN will deal with any Agricultural, Horticultural or Conservation application.
