Ryetec's Kompass range have always offered a high specification on the flagship KA550 with it's hydraulically variable forward reach head for high visibility cutting. The smaller models have had a more basic specification with customers adding on options such as oil coolers & rear lights & bumper bar as required. Ryetec has now standardised the Kompass range to give the same high specification throughout the range for all models with only a small increase in price.
All models now feature a 200 litre oil tank and cooler, rear lights set in steel rear bumper, 100º power slew with breakback, heavy duty 1.3 metre head with 150mm (6") roller, cast steel pump and motor with independent drive to twin pump system. These features give all the Kompass range the ability to cut the largest of hedges or overgrown verges without overheating and with reliable service over a long working life.
Farmer and Contractor, Rob Sturdy of Eden Farm, Malton, N Yorks, took delivery of his K550E a 5.5 metre (18'4") reach machine last September. It replaced an ageing machine bought second hand and now past its best, especially when called on to tackle hedges which have not been cut for a couple of years. The Kompass was specified with Ryetec's electric switch controls as Rob had been used to a similar system on his old machine. Although Rob did not justify the forward reach option of the KA550 Avant, he did feel that the other standard features of this machine would be beneficial, and so Ryetec supplied the high spec base unit with a standard 5.5 metre reach arm.
The standard Kompass general purpose flails where supplied and Rob has found that compared with the large 'T' flails his old machine was fitted with, the Kompass can tackle in one pass what took two if not three passes with the old machine. The large diameter rotor and large clearance between rotor and head mean that large volumes of material can pass through and out of the head without overloading the drive system. This requirement Rob feels will become more important as hedges are left for longer periods between cut due to new conservation guide lines and practices.
The Kompass can be supplied with 5, 5.5 & 6 metre telescopic arms as well as the hydraulic variable forward reach arm of the Avant model. Controls are either, Cable, electric or hydraulic proportional controls. The same base unit can also be supplied with larger arms up to 8.2 metres for dyke mowing applications.
