Filmed on location at Sunderland Council, the video captures the process of setting up three brand-new Ryetec SL420 flail mowers with cable control systems. Max introduces the machines before joining Chris for a step-by-step walkthrough of the setup.
The episode begins with an explanation of the stabiliser bracket, which is identical across the SL320, SL420, and MP300 models. The bracket is made of three main parts: one top section and two lower arms. The top section connects into the tractor’s top link point, while the two lower arms slide in and are pinned to adjust height. The tractor’s own top link then connects through the bracket to the hedge cutter or flail mower, providing extra stability during operation.
Chris demonstrates how to back the tractor carefully up to the machine before attaching the A-frame and securing the pins. On the featured tractor, space around the top link and lower arms was tight, so the A-frame was fitted first to align everything correctly.
The next step focuses on connecting the PTO pump. Because the tractor model was older than the previous two delivered that day, the pickup pitch was slightly different. Chris adjusts the anti-rotation bracket that prevents the PTO pump from spinning during use. After removing and repositioning the bolts, he slides the pump onto the PTO shaft, locks it in place using the quick-release coupling, and reinstates the safety chain.
The safety chain is attached to a solid mounting point on the tractor, such as a spare top link hole, ensuring that the pump remains stable and cannot rotate under load. This step highlights the importance of safely securing all connections before operation.
With the main frame attached and the PTO drive fitted, Chris reinstalls the original top link between the A-frame and implement, adjusting it for level alignment. Once in position, he tightens the locking nut to secure the setup.
The final part of the setup involves connecting and mounting the cable controls. The Sunderland Council workshop had pre-cut the cable mounts into a neat frame on the tractor side panel, making it easy to bolt the control box in place. The control levers are then fixed securely to the bracket, ensuring smooth and accurate operation from the cab.
Throughout the video, Max and Chris emphasise small but crucial details that make a big difference in performance and safety, from correctly positioning the stabiliser bracket to adjusting for different tractor geometries. Their practical demonstration reflects Ryetec’s ongoing support for operators and councils using their machines across the UK.
Straightforward, reliable, and designed for professional use, the SL420 continues to prove why Ryetec’s flail mowers are trusted for consistent results in demanding environments.
